An Ode to Italy

The Granita Bar

What is it?

Granita is made by blending fresh fruit and cream. It originated in Sicily, which is where my family is from, making the opportunity to work with a granita maker all the more intriguing.

Love, Love, Love

A family friend asked me to help design a logo for a granita store she wanted to open. I obviously had to say yes because I love Italy and I love sweets. Turns out I also love her granita as well.

Inspiration

We wanted the branding to follow traditional Italian style but have a modern twist. That twist ended up coming in the form of an electric blue that we incorporated into the color palette.

The winner

Final logo design

The client was adamant about using the image of an artichoke somewhere in the logo because it symbolizes “welcome” in Sicily. In the end we decided having the artichoke up front may be misleading to customers since it’s not an ingredient in any granita flavor. We compromised by using it in the secondary logo badge and potentially as a small graphic accent on other print collateral.

The look and feel

Brand identity

The brand identity for this project was really fun for me because it led to one of those design moments where you don’t think something will work and then it surprisingly does. I was hesitant when the client suggested using an electric blue artichoke but I decided to mock one up and sure enough it looked great. I think it gives the brand a refreshingly vibrant and modern feel.
